Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd. (TKM) today announced the launch of the Corolla Altis Diesel in India. The latest offering from TKM has been developed keeping in mind the distinctive requirements of the Indian customer with the basic concept of 'optimum balance of performance and economy'. India is the first Asian country to get the BSIV Corolla Altis Diesel.

The Corolla Altis is available with a newly developed 1.4L in-line 4-cylinder D-4D Common Rail Diesel Engine that generates a peak power of 88.4 PS and a peak torque of 205 Nm. Toyota's D-4D technology also used in the Innova, Fortuner, Prado and Land Cruiser 200 has earned a reputation the world-over for its high quality, durability and reliability.

The D-4D engine in the Corolla Altis is complemented by a 6-Speed Manual Transmission - a 'first-in-segment' offering ? to provide flat torque that would mean lesser gear shifting, leading to better fuel efficiency. The car has registered a best-in-class mileage of 21.43 km/l as certified by a test agency.

The Corolla Altis Diesel gets a differentiating sporty mesh grille, better aerodynamic characteristics, and the lowest NVH and best ground clearance in its segment. The car is available in seven colours - Silver Mica Metallic, Champagne Mica Metallic, Dark Red Mica Metallic, White Pearl Mica, Light Blue Mica Metallic, Super White and Black Mica.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd. announced special schemes for its customers during the month of December. As part of the scheme, Hyundai is offering free insurance, exchange bonuses and free car accessories on the purchase of Hyundai cars. The flagship model Santro which was launched in 1998 will be available under this scheme at the ten year old, introductory price of Rs 2.99 lakhs.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd has launched the scheme on its entire product range, namely, Santro (GS/GLS/Non-AC), i10 (all variants), Getz (Petrol), Accent (GLE), Verna (Petrol and Diesel). All Santro GL (Solid) purchases will get a special price of Rs. 2, 99,000. Santro Non AC, Santro GLS and i10 buyers will be eligible to get free insurance as well as car accessories worth Rs.7, 000, Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 5,000 respectively.

There are some interesting exchange schemes as well. Hyundai customers can avail the exchange benefits up to Rs. 20,000 on all the above cars. Honda has slashed prices of its Eco-friendly sedan Civic Hybrid by Rs. 8.14 lakh. Previously it was just double of normal Civic & now it is almost the same in price segment. The hybrid Civic will cost Rs. 13.36 lakh compared to its launch price of Rs 21.5 lakh. But this offer not for long time, its just limited period, till December this year.

It is the first time when Honda slashed a big amount of prices. The company, which operates as Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI) in India, said the decision to cut the price was aimed at making eco-friendly cars more affordable. The Civic Hybrid is India’s first full Hybrid vehicle. Its 1.3 litre petrol engine and an electric battery give it an average mileage of 20 kilometers per litre of petrol, making it the most fuel-efficient car in its category on Indian roads.

Honda VP Mr. Jnaneshwar Sen told to media that “we got a huge response from people about it, they wanted to by Hybrid it had more import duty cost so, they can’t able to buy it. We have taken a hit on the price to offer this eco-friendly technology to potential customers. There have been thousands of enquiries for the Hybrid, which had not culminated in actual sales.”




Audi, the German luxury car manufacturer, launched its Audi R8, the exclusive, mid-engine super sports car. The R8 is the winner of 2008 “World Performance Car” and the “World Car Design of the Year” awards. The stylish and progressive Audi is priced at 1,17,00,000 INR (ex-showroom Delhi without C.S.T., transportation, etc.).

The much-awaited high-performance super sports car, the Audi R8 was officially unveiled at the splendid lawns of the German Embassy in New Delhi. It was launched along with two Audi racing legends: Auto Union Type D and the Audi R8 Le Mans Prototype, both chosen for their link to ground-breaking technologies of their time. These cars were introduced to the public in a rare display, after which, in a stunning presentation, eight Audi R8’s moved in a convoy to the historic India Gate through streets of New Delhi.

“We decided to launch the Audi R8 in the Indian market based on the enthusiastic response received from our select customers. Super luxury carmaker Bentley plans to increase its focus on emerging markets, such as India, to boost sales to compensate for the slow down in developed economies. Bentley has sold 100 cars in India in the past 5 months and is tapping HNIs.

Bentley Motors regional director (Middle East, Africa and India) Chris Buxton said: “India is an important market for us with huge potential in the long term. There has been a slowdown in the global automobile market and we are expecting to compensate for this with demand from emerging markets like India, China and the Middle East. China remains the largest market in Asia and we are hoping India will emerge the next biggest in the medium to long term. Its strong growing economy and buoyant auto market is important for Bentley’s overall future growth.”

Bentley introduced the world’s fastest car in India, Continental Flying Spur Speed with a top speed of 320 kmph that will be available at Rs 2.5 crore (ex-showroom Delhi). With the launch of the new Speed variant, the company is targeting about 10 units of the Flying Spur family in the domestic market. Besides the new car, Bentley sells four other cars in the Indian market.
“We are looking at enhancing our range in India. All our future models will be simultaneously launched in India along with the global market,” Mr Buxton said. Bentley sold over 10,014 cars globally in 2007 and has a order backlog of 30 cars in the Indian market.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd, India’s largest passenger car exporter and the second largest car manufacturer, today announced a special scheme for the state and central government employees. Under the scheme, there will be special pricing, attractive finance options etc to enable the government employees to own a Hyundai car.

In view of the fact that government employees are due to receive the arrears of their salaries after revision in the Sixth Pay Commission, the arrears can be utilised as the down payment for purchase of the car and the revised salary increment will help them to accommodate their monthly EMI’s. The scheme will be run through October and November, 2008.

Hyundai has tied up with State Bank of India, Axis Bank and HDFC Bank to provide with attractive finance schemes for the government employees for their vehicle purchase.

Announcing the scheme, Arvind Saxena, Sr. Vice-President for Marketing & Sales, HMIL, said: "We are pleased to offer this special scheme to all the government employees’ who will soon be enjoying the benefits of their Sixth Pay Commission arrears. Tata Motors announced the launch of three new fully loaded variants on its popular Tata Indigo CS range. The Tata Indigo CS - Compact Sedan, launched at the Auto Expo at New Delhi in January 2008, has received an overwhelming response from customers across the country making the Indigo range clock over 84% growth this fiscal at an average of 4400 units per month.

The new variants are the petrol GLX model and two diesel LX models - in the Turbo-charged Diesel with Intercooler and DICOR (Direct Injection Common Rail) engine options. All three models will offer front and rear powered windows, a rear windscreen defogger and central locking to enhance customer comfort and security. The exteriors of the car on these variants will sport classy looking body coloured rub-rails with chrome inserts and body coloured ORVMs (Outer Rear View Mirrors). The interiors - beige for petrol and charcoal black for diesel - will offer a new look front console. The premium seat fabric and sporty leather-wrapped steering wheel will further add to the plush feel inside the cabin.

The Indigo CS itself carries forward the cabin seating comfort and space package that is now closely associated with the Indigo range and a capacious 380-litre boot. The First Generation of Honda City was introduced in mid 90’s responding to the requirements of automobiles among Asian people. Ford India is now providing some new optional features with its SUV model Endeavour like GPS Navigation System, in-car chiller cum warmer and a fifth door convex mirror.


These additional features are a ‘plug and go’, with installation at a special pricing of Rs. 27,500. They will now be available as an option on every new Endeavour, it added.


The GPS navigation System has great assistance in remote locations where the roads don’t necessarily have signs. All the driver has to do is enter in the destination and the GPS system then guides him/her with visual map instructions supported by voice prompts.


In-car chiller cum warmer will enable travelers to keep their food and beverages at the desired temperature and freshness. Japanese auto major Toyota on Friday-05th-Sep, launched the new Corolla Altis & announced plans to roll out its small car by 2010.

The new Corolla Altis price range between Rs. 10.83 lakh and Rs. 12.86 lakh (Ex-showroom Delhi), the 10th generation Corolla Altis comes with a 1.8-litre petrol engine in three variants. Equipped with many advanced safety and styling features to suit to Indian conditions, Corolla Altis now delivers the maximum power of 130 hp, 7 hp higher than the earlier model, and gives mileage of 14-15 km a litre (under test conditions).

The Company said we will also be increasing our product capacity and expanding the dealership network to achieve 10 % market share from the Indian automobile sector by 2015.

Launching the new Corolla that has sold over three-crore sedans worldwide, since its launch over 40 years ago and accounts for 30 per cent of Toyota’s global passenger car sales, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) Managing Director Hiroshi Nakagawa said the company planned to sell around 2,000 Altis a month in India.

Toyota’s Deputy Managing Director Sandeep Singh said, “The Company will be expanding its dealership from 77 at present to 170 by 2010. “We plan to strengthen our dealership network and reach out to new cities and towns.”

Honda recently launched New Accord in May-2008 now next in the line City ZX, it has announced the launch of its most popular mid-size next-generation City ZX by mid-September. The new Honda City 2008 edition would come loaded with a variety of new features & a Honda spokesperson said the new City-2008 will be loaded with a host of jazzy features.

Honda expected to introduce new features like paddle shift gear option on steering - a first in the segment-multi-airbags, integrated music system with steering mounted controls, anti-lock brake system (ABS), temperature control and electronically adjustable front seats. So, it is likely to be more expensive compared the current version.

Honda Siel Cars India president and CEO Masahiro Takedagawa had recently said about their plans: “We are looking at standardizing the G-CON body, ABS, I-Vtec engines and few other technical features in all our future cars. It’s part our commitment to provide world-class products to the Indian market.”


When contacted by ET, the Honda spokesperson clarified that there are no such plans. “The so-called news of a new City is mere media speculation and we would not like to comment on it. The current Honda City is the only model available globally, and is doing very well in the Indian market. The Honda City ZX continues to maintain its leadership position in the premium sedan segment, even in the current slowdown,” the spokesperson said.

Volkswagen India launched its globally successful models Jetta in India. The Jetta sedan assembled locally at Volkswagen’s Aurangabad facility will be available in three variants and two engines - Jetta 1.6L petrol engine with a five-speed manual gearbox, a 1.9L TDI diesel and option of a five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed DSG automatic transmission version.

The price of the Jetta 1.6L is Rs. 12.97 lakh and the 1.9L diesel Trendline Rs. 14.22 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. The top of the line 1.9L diesel Comfortline with DSG automatic transmission is priced at Rs. 16.67 lakh.

The car will be available in campanella white, red spice, reflex silver, platinum grey and deep black.

Volkswagen Group India sold 10,366 vehicles in the first six months of the current calendar year, a 69 per cent growth over the year-ago period, and is pushing to achieve deliveries of 20,000 units for the full year. The company is planning to sell 1,200 units of Jetta this year.

Addressing the media, Joerg Mueller, President and Managing Director, Volkswagen Group India, said, “Jetta is now being assembled in the Skoda facility in Aurangabad with parts coming in from our Mexico facility. We have accelerated work on the Chakan plant and it will make the VW Jetta and Skoda Fabia from the first half of 2009 with a high local content. We will receive a sales boost by 2010 when we launch our compact car from our Chakan (Pune) facility based on our Polo model but which has been tailored for India.”

Audi has launched new A4 Sedan

The German luxury car maker Audi has launched its new Audi A4 sedan in India. The car is based on an entirely new technical concept offering considerable advantages over its predecessor. The prices for the new vehicle start at Rs. 29 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai without CST, transportation).

“The Audi philosophy of ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’, the consistent innovation, has showed the way for the new generation Audi A4. As we target sales of 1,000 cars in India by the end of this year, the new Audi A4 will be a crucial product to help achieve this goal.” Audi plans to import the car initially. By the end of the year, it will build it locally as a completely knocked down unit, said Mr. Benoit Tiers, Managing Director of Audi India.

The new vehicle comes with a choice of two engines — the 2.0 TDI Multitronic with a power-output range of 105 kW (143 bhp) and the 3.2 FSI Tiptronic Quattro with 195 kW (265 bhp). Both use the direct fuel injection principle — FSI technology for the petrol engine and the common-rail system for the TDI unit.

BMW introduces new 5-Series

BMW, the German luxury car maker, has introduced new variants of its 5 Series sedan priced in the range of Rs. 36.9 lakh & Rs. 46.8 lakh as it looks to strengthen its presence in the country.

The new variants, BMW 520d, 530d and 530d Highline powered by diesel engines, will be additions to its existing petro variants BMW 525i and BMW 530i.

The BMW India President Peter Kronschnabl said that "The BMW 5 Series is in the luxury Business Class car segment, and it is our goal to continue providing our customers in India with the highest standards of all-round quality, safety, and perfection to ensure the highest levels of comfort and luxury.

The company which started assembling cars in India last year had sold about 1,400 units and is targeting to sell 2,000 units this year.

It had increased production capacity of its Chennai plant from 1,700 units to 3,000 units per year on a single shift basis with an additional investment od Rs 3 crore. It had made an initial investment of Rs 110 crore.


Mercedes-Benz India, the luxury car maker launched two new variants--E 230 and E 220 CDI of its E-Class range priced at Rs. 41.44 lakh and Rs. 38.99 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai) respectively.


"The E-Class has sold more than 10,000 units in India since its introduction in 1995. Now, we have introduced Bi-Xenon headlamps in the exterior coupled with a three-way memory package and electrically adjustable steering wheel, all of which are now standard with the vehicle. The two new engines will further add to the popularity of the E-Class," Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director and CEO Wilfried Aulbur said in a statement.

The E 230 has a 2.5 litre V6 petrol engine with a 7G-tronic transmission.

It will be available with features like thermatronic (four-zone) air-conditioning, wood leather steering wheel and ambient lighting added on as standard offering.


The E 220 CDI is armed with a 2.2 litre, four-cylinder diesel engine.
